08 Sep 10 Have You Ever Tried To Explain Search Engine Optimization?

I used to try to explain to people what I did for a living in great detail, but quickly learned that it probably wasn’t worth it. Search engine optimization is tricky enough for the people that are in the business. I’ve basically decided that trying to explain to a non techie person what it was, was like trying to teach a kangaroo how to drive a car with a clutch. My biggest problem though, is that I enjoy my work so much that I can’t help but talk about it. Recently, for instance my brothers were in town for a visit. Something we hadn’t done for a while, and I and one of my other brothers are both running our own businesses.

Me in SEO world and him in the real world in the form of a traditional restaurant business. He doesn’t have much of a web presence. Really just a FaceBook page that helps him stays in touch with customers. Well, I of course start rattling on about the benefits of owning your own domain name and website. About how he could starting taking a look at targeting certain keywords, and building content to match those keywords and having different link building strategies and the potential for bringing new customers to his restaurant. Of course, all this conversation was going on over a few drinks, and I just assumed he had forgotten about it. Well, actually he didn’t. Now it looks like I will be taking a newbie down the road of building up a website from scratch, and making sure of course that it gets lots of search engine traffic.
